Honda Malaysia has recently officially unveiled the FL5 Civic Type R, which costs RM399,900 on the road without insurance. Even if you have the cash or a loan waiting in the wings, you might not be able to buy one since, as far as we know, the newest CTR is the first car to be sold via ballot in Malaysia.


The decision to sell via ballot rather than first come, first served is owing to the modest allocation - 19 units in the initial batch - and significant demand for the FL5. There will be one unit during the debut, and this car will be HM's internal unit, bringing the total to 20. However, this is only for 2023; we understand that more units will be available the following year.



You can put down a deposit along with your name at a Honda dealer, however the names in the vote will be chosen by Honda Malaysia, which we're told will be done internally but audit-compliantly. The deadline is October 15, and the drawing will take place on October 20. I'd say good luck to all of us, but because I don't have enough money, good luck to you.


The FL5 Civic Type R, like its FK8 predecessor, is powered by a KC20C1 2.0-liter turbo-four connected exclusively to a six-speed manual driving the front wheels - no automatic or AWD, as it should be. Malaysian outputs are 319 PS at 6,500 rpm and 420 Nm of torque from 2,600 to 4,000 rpm, which is somewhat lower than Japan's 330 PS/420 Nm - as with Australia, this is likely owing to our gasoline quality.
